Street Outreach

The Motor City Mitten Mission (MCMM) Street Outreach Program is widely recognized as one of the premier homeless outreach programs in Michigan and has become a model for outreach teams and communities throughout the United States. Operating seven days a week, 365 days a year, MCMM proactively engages individuals experiencing homelessness wherever they are located, including encampments, abandoned buildings, vehicles, parks, wooded areas, motels, and other unsheltered environments.

As a progressive social services organization, MCMM has built a reputation for innovation, compassion, and effective problem-solving in addressing homelessness. The organization specializes in working with individuals experiencing chronic homelessness, severe mental illness, substance use disorders, and complex co-occurring conditions. Through a relationship-based approach, MCMM is often able to engage individuals who have historically been resistant to services and connect them to pathways toward stability, treatment, and recovery.

MCMM is frequently called upon by law enforcement agencies, municipalities, healthcare providers, schools, businesses, and community organizations to provide crisis intervention, consultation, and direct assistance involving individuals experiencing homelessness. The organization has developed strong partnerships with police departments and local governments throughout Metro Detroit and is considered a regional leader in homeless outreach, encampment engagement and relocation, behavioral health intervention, shelter coordination, and housing navigation.

• Encampment engagement and relocation

• Crisis intervention and de-escalation

• Emergency shelter placement and coordination

• Housing navigation and stabilization

• Mental health and medical service coordination

• Substance use treatment referrals and engagement

• Transportation assistance

• Document restoration and identification procurement

• Distribution of meals, water, clothing, hygiene products,         blankets, and other basic necessities

MCMM's outreach model goes beyond meeting immediate needs by addressing systemic barriers that prevent individuals from accessing housing, treatment, and supportive services. Through advocacy, collaboration, and direct service delivery, MCMM continues to help shape best practices in homeless outreach throughout Michigan and beyond.
